Ever heard of stress being compared to holding a glass of water? If someone gives you a cup of water and you hold it for a few seconds there is not much of a difference in you, if someone gives you a glass of water and you hold it for an hour you will feel the heaviness of the cup weighing down on you. How about holding it for a day? Two days? This is exactly how stress works within our body and mind. Stress builds up in our minds and it can stay there for weeks or days getting worse and worse. Stress is detrimental, we can't see it or touch it but we feel it.

Physical effects

  • Insomnia

Stress can present its effects extremely rapidly, one of the most common physical effects is insomnia. Stress, as mentioned before, builds up in the body which has one tossing and turning all night. Insomnia presents itself especially at night because this is when there are no distractions and one is left with their thoughts.

There is also something called sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where your brain lacks oxygen and it causes you to wake up abruptly and constantly, this can also be triggered by stress.

  • Social interactions

Stress can also affect your social interactions. When one has so much stress and things to worry about they can isolate themselves or put a barrier between themselves and society because it causes too much anxiety due to the constant worry.

  • Diseases

Stress can also lead to detrimental diseases. The nervous system has a direct connection to stress in the body and this can trigger the development of diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
